Small dog that can be haired or hairless. They are graceful and able to climb or jump like a cat. The Hairless variety has only a small tuft of hair on the top of the head, on the tail and on the feet. They make excellent apartment dogs because of their size and temperament. The Powder Puff variety has long, straight and silky coat that needs brushing almost every day. Many color combinations are possible.

They were discovered by Chinese traders in one of two places: Mexico or Africa. They belong to the domestic dog species Canis africanis. There is a lethal gene involved in the hairless mutation-when two of these genes come together, the dog is DEAD!

They are very active dogs, but fragile due to their small toy-like size.

A hairless variety, Chinese Crested's do not need brushing or grooming. Because of this, they are almost a perfect dog for those who are asthmatic or allergic to dog hair!

Much of this breed exhibits clown-like personality whose main purpose in life is to entertain its human family companions. They love to be held, cuddle with your or curl in your lap. In addition, Crested's love to be dressed in clothes!

They are also very athletic dogs.

Generally this is a healthy and long lived dog. However, it can be susceptible to Patellar Luxation, Legg Calve Perthes, and PRA.

Many Crested's have problems with skin disorders.

This is an indoor breed, and cannot withstand the elements. Because of their lack of hair, they must stay indoors in order to survive. They can easily sunburn, so sunscreen is a necessity.

Frequent complaints about this breed involves their bad breath and strange teeth.
