A medium sized dog who can live happily in the city or in the country. The Bearded Collie has a shaggy coat that is parted in the middle. They range in color from black to silver to dark brown to sandy. This dog needs to live in a place where he can run and exercise adequately. If not given enough attention or room to move, he may whine, climb, dig or chew rather destructively.

Originated in Scotland as a sheepherder and cattle driver. They are sometimes called the Highland Collie. Ancestors likely came from the European continent. Possible ancestors include the Poland Lowland Sheepdog and the Komondor. Because of their high intelligence, Bearded Collies could separate out their group of sheep if it became intermingled with neighbouring herds.

They will actively participate in playing ball, taking brisk walks, running free in a fenced area. They will do just about anything their human companions allow them to do.

This is an active, outgoing, bouncy and affectionate dog who loves to be with its human family. They rarely bark and do so only when excited or on alert mode.

Bearded Collies are very smart, independent thinking dogs. They are capable of house training, but like human children, each pup is an individual. They are good with children and will announce a stranger to the family in quick fashion.

This is a generally healthy breed, do be cautious of hip dysplasia. Always ask if your pup's parents were x-rayed for this ailment. Beardies are increasingly falling victim to Addison's Disease, so it is important to watch for its signs and symptoms.

Some suffer from various types of allergies, seasonal, environmental or food related. Be a responsible owner and watch for these.

This breed needs a lot of exercise. Without it, your prized, well behaved Beardie can instantly turn into a destructive shag-force around the home or yard. They also demand an intense grooming schedule to keep their beautiful locks from matting. Once a week grooming may be enough, but if your Beardie is outside at all, once a day grooming is called for.

Bearded Collies also require a LOT of attention. Don't expect to leave the dog alone and have it be pleased with you. Rather, expect to find your yard dug up, favourite shoes chewed to bits or your dog whining excessively upon your return.

Bearded Collies can be very independent but they do respond with firm obedience training.
