American Staffordshire Terrier Dog BreedDog class - Terrier
Average height - 17 to 19 inches
Average weight - 50 to 80 pounds
Size - Small to Medium
Average life span - 10 years

Medium sized dog with a hard short coat. They range in color from fawn, to black, to brindle to patched. The ears can be cropped or left alone. Am Staffs are fine in the city but need vigorous exercise. They are powerful and protective dogs who need to be accustomed to people at an early age.

Originated in England as a cross between fighting bulldogs and terriers. They were bred to be canine gladiators when dog fighting and bull baiting were in style. Conscientious breeding in the US has produced a more affectionate reliable dog.

They are very active dogs that love any kind of vigorous exercise.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is very active, affectionate and tolerant of children. Due to the fact that they are an intelligent breed, they often make wonderful watchdogs and guard dogs.

Generally healthy dogs but susceptible hip dysplasia and serious tumours.

This breed can be very territorial, dominant toward people and animals, and reluctant to follow obedience commands. Because of their dominance they are aggressive by nature and are not afraid to fight.

These are powerful, protective dogs and should not be allowed off the leash except in a safe enclosed area.

This information is incorrect. The ASBT among other bull terrier breeds are extremely social with strangers and make terrible guard dogs because of this. They are not aloof with anything and excude confidence with all other people and dogs which often gets them into dog fights when accompanied by their dominant nature.

Put simply they are great with all people bad with most animals.
